Columna is a free, not-for-profit iOS app. Progress stays on your phone. Reading happens on the Vatican's own pages.

No account required

You don't need to sign up, sign in, or create a profile. There is no Columna account in this version.

Progress stays on your device

Your place on the journey lives in the app on your iPhone. We do not keep a cloud copy of your reading.

Catechism text is not ours

Tapping a journey day or a part opens the official English Catechism inside Columna, in a full-screen in-app web view (WKWebView). It does not leave the app and it does not open Safari.

The page loaded is still a Holy See page on vatican.va, the English archive under vatican.va/archive/ENG0015, including the index and the paragraph pages. Columna does not host, copy, or alter that text.

Those Vatican pages follow the Vatican site, not this privacy notice. Because the page loads directly from vatican.va, the Holy See's site can still behave as itself inside the reader, including its own cookies and scripts. Columna does not add analytics to that view.

One separate control does open Safari: Settings → "Read the Catechism on vatican.va", which links to https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_INDEX.HTM. That link is not how a day or a part is read.

Reminders stay on your phone

If notifications are allowed, the app schedules two local notifications on your iPhone through iOS. There is no push server, no Columna account, and no remote copy of reminder data. Permission is requested for alerts and sounds only.

The daily reminder repeats every day at the time you pick in onboarding. You can change that time in Settings ("Daily reminder"). The title is "Time to sit down". The body is "Today's sitting is waiting — a few minutes with the Catechism."

A second, separate notification is a streak nudge at 10:00 PM local time. It is not a time you pick. It is an automatic reminder for an unfinished sitting, scheduled only while today's sitting is still unfinished: tonight at 10:00 PM if that time has not passed, otherwise the next night at 10:00 PM. Finishing today's sitting moves it off tonight. If notification permission is denied, this pending nudge is removed. It does not repeat on its own; the app schedules the next single night. The title is "The flame is waiting". The body is "You haven't finished today's reading. A few minutes keeps your streak going."

What we don't collect

This version does not include analytics, advertising, crash reports, or a mailing list. We don't sell data. If that changes, this page will change first.
